11 month’s ago I headlined a post on my own blog titled  “Is a designer ‘cheating’ if they use 3D modelling packages that are incredibly ‘easy to learn and use’?” http://annmarieshillito.wordpress.com/2011/05/16/cloud9-cheating/ The following quote from Nick Grace who runs RapidForm at the Royal College of Art in London is pertinent to my blog point about complexity of process excluding many talented and creative people from using digital tools such as 3D modelling and 3D printing as they do not have the time and resources to begin to learn software of any sort with steep learning curves. In Christopher Mims interesting article in Technology Review on 04/02/2012 about what’s to stop kids from pirating LEGO sets as readily as they pirate music, he uses Lego as an example. Makers are already constructing custom lego pieces on their 3D printers as they have incentives and wherewithal to ‘download plans from the internet and simply 3D print their own sets’. His question is ‘In a 3-D Printed Future, Do Toymakers Have a Business Model? I agree with one of his commentors, ccarmy at Shapeways, that the questions could be reframed — “In a 3-D Printed Future, What is the Business Model for Toymakers?” ccarmy’sRead More →
