This is why Anarkik3DDesign is developed for people like us to fit well with how we think and make, to give us a way to digitally explore our creativity yet not compromise on our hand making at the bench.
As creative people we love what we do, working with our hands, using physical tools, our knowledge of materials and processes, and our skills, to make a living from our practice. We gain our tacit knowledge about materials and processes through physically making and touch is important for this.
This means that we have assets of competency in real world making to bring to the virtual works of designing digitally for 3D printing. Our experience and knowledge intelligently inform the digital stage, reducing the likelihood of designing the unmakable! (Justin Marshall 2001)
What is special about Anarkik3DDesign?
Anarkik3DDesign is haptic. Haptic means touch and A3DDesign uses 3D virtual touch so that people like us* can engage with 3D digital modelling and 3D printing on our terms. With the sensation of ‘touching and feeling’ we tap into how we naturally interact in the real world. This means we have less adapting to do to get to grips with navigating and working in a three dimensional digital environment. This means being able to get into being creative from the start and achieving a good balance between working digitally and working and thinking through hand-making !

Once you either own A3DDesign or have loaned it you can access password protected resources to support self learning such as video tutorials and worksheets, supplemented by information on keyboard shortcuts, etc..
To hit the ground running Anarkik3D organises workshops, classes and masterclasses which are short and sweet as Anarkik3DDesign is so quick and easy to learn.
Inspiration and designing for 3D printing
For inspiration, visit Anarkik Creations, to see work by professional jewellers who use Anarkik3DDesign. A3DDesign is not only for jewellers: its just that large 3D printed objects can be expensive and jewellery is mostly smallish and high value.

Anarkik3D’s workshops and courses cover information about using Anarkik3DDesign to create objects to be 3D printed. Models are saved & exported in the file formats of .stl and .wrl (for colour printing). This page on 3D printing has more information and this page has FAQs regarding designing for 3D printing.
A3DDesign is not just for creating models for 3D printing. Some of us use it for concept visualisation. An idea can be work through in the round before making it at the bench.

Farah Bandookwala combined the strengths of Anarkik3D Design with the strengths of Rhino, a standard CAD package that she used to design the fittings for the electronics parts in her interactive art. She used ,stl to transfer models between programmes.

Anarkik3D’s founder and CEO, Ann Marie Shillito, is one of us because she is a designer maker and jeweller and use Anarkik3DDesign. For example in 2011 she designed and prototyped her daughter’s wedding ring which was 3D printed in titanium. Below are the stages of development – the models in Anarkik3DDesign, as 3D printed prototypes for testing size, and as the finished rings. The titanium ring was designed to flow around the stone set in the wrought gold and diamond engagement ring that jeweller Teena Ramsay made.
Ann Marie has used her knowledge of making, designing and using digital technologies to write her book: ‘Digital Crafts: Industrial Technology for Applied Artists and Designer Makers’. The book includes the work of many other progressive designer makers and early adopters of 2D and 3D digital technologies. See some images here.
